9th ranked Mustangs beat Santa Clara in fog shortened game

On Monday the Cal Poly baseball team received its highest national ranking ever when Perfect Game ranked them ninth. On Tuesday the Mustangs went out and backed up the ranking with a 6-0 win against visiting Santa Clara. A majority of the game was played in fog and in the seventh inning the umpire called the game due to lack of visibility.

Cal Poly had 14 hits and true freshman pitcher Justin Calomeni (3-0) pitched six shutout innings to improve the Mustangs to 9-2. Santa Clara drops to 6-7.

Cal Poly senior catcher Chris Hoo got the scoring started in the second inning with a two RBI double to dead center field. Sophomore second baseman Mark Mathias added another run two batters later on a sacrifice fly to center. Junior right fielder Nick Torres capped the four run inning with a run scoring single. Torres, Mathias, Hoo and senior third baseman Jimmy Allen were all 2-4 in the game. Sophomore shortstop Peter Van Gansen was 3-3.

Cal Poly designated hitter Brian Mundell started the bottom of the fifth inning with a double after the Santa Clara right fielder lost the ball in the fog. After that play the umpires conferred about possibly delaying the game because of visibility concerns but decided to continue. The next batter was Allen who plated Mundell with a double down the right field line. Allen was knocked in by Hoo later in the frame.

Santa Clara made five errors in losing for a second time this season to the Mustangs. Cal Poly won, 8-0 at Santa Clara on February 18.

Calomeni allowed four hits and one walk while striking out six, the right hander has now won all three of his collegiate starts. Junior right hander, Danny Zandona allowed a hit and a walk in one shutout inning of relief.

The game was stopped with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Cal Poly starts a three game series at Seattle University (5-8) on Friday before embarking on an 18 game homestand.
