After quarterbacking the Atascadero football team into the third round of the CIF playoffs, Robbie Berwick is hoping to lead the basketball team even further. The Greyhounds play at Leuzinger on Tuesday night in the Division 3AA quarterfinals. Leuzinger is the top seed with a 21-7 record. "We're looking for a CIF championship, league's over with. We're not even looking to that anymore and we just want a CIF championship and we're working toward it" said Berwick.
The junior was a big reason Atascadero shared the Pac-7 title with Righetti. Berwick hit a buzzer-beating shot to beat the Warriors in the second to last game of the regular season. "I shot it, I let it go and I knew it was in and it felt great because so much was at stake and so many things were on the line there" said Berwick who's averaging 18 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds this season.
Berwick excels on the gridiron and the hardwood, college coaches from both sports are interested in which one he'll decide to pursue. "I like football in football season, I like basketball in basketball season. So between those two I can't really tell what I want to do in the future yet." Berwick has already gotten a basketball scholarship offer from Cal Poly.
Above all else, Berwick just likes to compete. His competitive drive has earned him the respect of his teammates. "Rob is tenacious, he's a great competitor, a great teammate, he always just wants to win and he plays his heart out every game" said junior guard Joe Johnson.
The 6'4" Berwick plays both point guard and shooting guard for the Greyhounds. His ability to shoot, penetrate and pass make him a nightmare match up for defenses.
Berwick says he's driven to win a championship for Atascadero. He wants to go down as an all-time Greyhound. "I really want to walk out of this school being known as one of the best athletes to come out of here and I work for it" said Berwick.
Atascadero plays at Leuzinger in Lawndale at 7:00pm on Tuesday. A win would advance the Greyhounds into the semifinals on Friday.
