Traffic on Highway 101 came to a standstill near Los Alamos Tuesday night after a two vehicle accident.
It happened around 7:45 p.m. about one mile north of Alisos Canyon Road in the northbound lanes.
The California Highway Patrol says Keith Thompson, 31, of Santa Cruz, drifted from the southbound lanes into the northbound lanes. CHP officers say Thompson hit another car. The driver of that car, identified as Colleen Harmon, 56, of Arroyo Grande, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Thompson sustained major injuries and was airlifted in a Calstar helicopter to a hospital.
Santa Barbara County Fire said it took 20 minutes to get Thompson out of his car.
The cause of the accident is under investigation by the CHP.
Traffic in the northbound lanes came to a stop for about an hour.
As of 8:45, traffic is moving again on the northbound side of Highway 101.
