AG boys earn third place at Morro Bay's Harding Invitational

The Arroyo Grande High boys basketball team rebounded from a tough overtime loss in the semifinals to rout Heritage Christian 75-52 to claim third place in Morro Bay High's annual Harding Invitational Tournament on Saturday.

The Eagles overcame a 17-5 deficit after the first quarter to outscore Heritage Christian 70-35 the rest of the way. The Eagles outscored their opponents 26-13 in both the second and third quarters. Cobe Williams led the Eagles with 14 points, while Matt Willkomm added 13 points. Andrew Midyett scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for AG and Carson Wack finished with 12 points. Wilkomm dished out 6 assists, while Quillan Smith added 9 points and 6 boards. The Eagles made 8 three-point baskets thanks to 4 from Williams and two from Wack.

Earlier in the day, AG lost 60-59 in overtime to Independence out of Bakersfield in the semifinals. The Eagles led by 12 points at halftime and 9 points after three quarters. Willkomm and Williams scored 17 points apiece for AG. Williams made 5 three-point buckets.

Host Morro Bay finished the tournament 3-1. The Pirates lost in the morning 71-53 to Heritage Christian, before coming back to beat Pioneer Valley 59-53. Luke Munds and Zach Smith had 23 points each in the victory for Morro Bay under first year head coach Mike Godsey.

Independence went on to win the championship by beating Escondido in the final.
