Arroyo Grande High coach Phillip Reid finished first out of more than 33,000 runners at the 34th annual Shamrock Shuffle 8K race on Sunday in downtown Chicago. The event served as the USA Track and Field's National Road Club Championships.
The 27 year old former Cal Poly star won with a time of 23:08. He earned a two second victory over Jacob Riley of Michigan.
"I wasn't expecting to win," said Reid, a member of Asics Aggies elite racing team. "My teammates and I came out here to compete with the best and that's what we did."
Los Osos native Sergio Reyes finished 10th with a time of 23:27.
Reid's team was one of 49 elite club teams from across the country to compete. Asics Aggies Running Club finished second overall with a combined time of 1:33.52.
