Animal Care Clinic: My dog has a hacking cough, can you help?

Q: Kassandra wrote in to Animal Care Clinic asking about her miniature poodle's hacking cough. Would giving him Dayquil help his cough?

A: Dear Kassandra, I can only imagine how bothersome and worrisome this cough must be for both you and Nemo. Please do not give any human medications to Nemo. This could be a life-threatening mistake, especially for such a small dog.

It is very important that a diagnosis be made. Poodles are very prone to heart disease and failing to diagnose this and treat it early could be devastating. At the same time, Poodles are also quite prone to a condition called "collapsing trachea" which rarely requires any treatment.

There are so many other things that could cause a cough. We would be very happy to help you with making a diagnosis and could look at any previous x-rays or other tests that you might have. Quite often a diagnosis can be made with just a thorough and complete physical exam.

I hope Nemo is feeling better soon!
