The application process began Wednesday to fill a vacant Santa Maria City Council seat.
The opening was created in December when Alice Patino became mayor. The decision to go the application route followed three unsuccessful attempts by the four members of the council to agree on who to name to the open seat.
The vote to accept applications was three-to-one,with Mayor Patino opposing that decision. She had supported appointing Etta Waterfield to the position. Waterfield came in third in the race for two council seats in November, losing by just two votes.
Applications for the city council seat are available at the clerk's office at Santa Maria City Hall.
February 12th is the deadline to apply. The City Council will interview applicants at the February 19th meeting.
