Longtime Cal Poly women's basketball head coach Faith Mimnaugh added her second San Luis Obispo County-based recruit from the Class of 2013 on Thursday. Atascadero High girls basketball star Mary Kate Evans signed a national letter of intent to become a Mustang.
Morro Bay High's Hannah Gilbert signed her NLI to Cal Poly on Wednesday.
Evans earned All-CIF and All-Pac 7 League First Team honors last season as a junior. She averaged 19.3 points, 4.4 blocks, 2.9 steals and 13 rebounds per game for the Greyhounds. She injured her knee in the CIF quarterfinals, but is healthy for her senior season. She even played a full season of volleyball in the fall.
Evans said Cal Poly was always her top choice. "It's a great fit for me academically because it's the top school for engineering. I love the coaches and the program are great. And it's local so it'll really cool to have all my family at the games," said Evans.
She averaged 11 points, 2 blocks and 7 rebounds per game as a junior and tallied 5 points, 3 boards per game as a freshman for the varsity squad.
"Evans is a versatile guard-forward. She can shoot the three or post on the block. She also has decision making skills and can begin the fastbreak from the rebound. She's not the power player that Griffin is, but has similar skills and at 6-2, more length."
Evans plans to major in environmental engineering at Cal Poly.
