Beautiful bowls and full bellies help food bank in Santa Maria

The Food Bank of Santa Barbara County got a nice shot in the arm today thanks to the annual "Empty Bowls" fundraiser at Santa Maria Fair Park. Hundreds gathered over the noon hour to warm their bellies with some good soup and their hearts by donating to a good cause. But it came with some big decisions to make. The first decision: which bowl of about 1,000 handmade by local artists to put your soup in. Students from Alan Hancock College and local high schools, as well as local artists made the bowls. (Mine, shown in the picture on this story, was made by a student at St. Joseph High School and I love it!) Once you got that decision behind you, then you had to decide which soup to fill it with. Chefs from local restaurants prepared some of their favorites and local community leaders served the soups. Tickets were $25.00 and all proceeds benefit the Food Bank.
