Big third inning fuels victory for Arroyo Grande baseball over Paso Robles

A six-run third inning propelled the Arroyo Grande High baseball team to a 9-3 Pac 7 League victory over visiting Paso Robles on Wednesday afternoon.

After their second straight win over the Bearcats, the Eagles improved to 9-3-2 in league and stayed in the hunt for a Pac 7 title. Paso Robles dropped to 1-13 in league.

The Bearcats scored first in the second inning when Matt Keller scored on an error by the second baseman. Ben Mecham ripped a single to center field and Justin Davis tried to score from the second but Paul Ormonde threw a perfect strike from center field to nail Davis at the plate as AJ Cipolla applied the tag to end the threat. Bailey Gaither scored on a fielder's choice in the third inning after he singled and stole two bases.

Jonathan Baldwin plunked the first two hitters in the bottom of the third and they both came around to score on Garrett Ball's two-out double over the rightfielder's head to tie it 2-2. Ball and Kyle Brown later scored when Cipolla was caught in a run down between first and third base with the bases loaded. Ball broke for the plate and the throw home got away from the catcher, who collided with Ball, allowing Brown to score as well. Casey Muth clubbed a 2-run double to the right-centerfield gap to cap the 6 run inning.

Cipolla led the Eagles' 9-hit atack with 3 hits. Ball finished with 2 hits and 4 RBI. Chris Davidson collected two hits and threw a complete game 7-hitter for AG to earn the victory. He struck out 8 Bearcats and threw 82 of his 111 pitches for strikes. Dylan Azevedo added 2 RBI during a 3-run sixth inning for the Eagles.

Sam Neely clubbed a 3-run home run in the first inning to lead Atascadero to a 5-4 win over San Luis Obispo. The Tigers fell to 9-5 in league, while the Greyhounds improved to 7-6-1.

Righetti won its eighth-straight game with a 13-4 victory over rival St. Joseph. The Warriors remain in first place at 13-4 in league.
