Cabrillo boys shutout Santa Ynez in LPL battle of unbeatens

Two first half goals propelled the Cabrillo High boys soccer team into sole possesion of first place in the Los Padres League with a 2-0 victory over visiting Santa Ynez on Tuesday.

The Conquistadores improved to 6-7-2 on the season and 4-0 in league, while Santa Ynez fell to 4-4-2 and 3-1 in league play. The Pirates shared the LPL title with Nipomo last season.

The Conquistadores struck first in the 15th minute when Eduardo Cardenas sent a ball inside the box that went to Francois Molitor and the senior forward fired a rocket to the back of the net to give Cabrillo a 1-0 lead.

Cabrillo struck again with about five minutes to go in the first half with some quick passing outside of the box that resulted in a goal by Stephen Dalton assisted by Mario Villalobos.

The Pirates had several scoring opportunities in the first half, but each time a ball was on frame Cabrillo goalie Michael Lowes was there to haul it in.

The Conquistadores travel to Nipomo on Thursday, while Santa Ynez travels to Templeton.

Also on Tuesday, the Santa Ynez girls blanked Cabrillo 2-0 to gain sole possession of first place over the defending LPL champion Conquistadores.
