Behind its constant full-court pressure defense and fast-paced offense, the Cabrillo boys basketball team dominated the second half and beat visiting South Pasadena 71-44 in a first round CIF Division 3A playoff game on Wednesday night.
The Conquistadores led by 7 points at the half, but outscored the Tigers 23-5 in the third quarter to take command of the game.
12th seeded Cabrillo improved to 18-9 on the year and captured its first playoff victory in eight years. The Conquistadores had lost seven-straight first round games prior to the victory.
Junior Chad Brodhead led the Conqs with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Joshua Harris added 14 points and Josh West finished with 12.
Cabrillo hosts 5th seeded Northwood on Friday night. Northwood beat Pomona 62-23 in the first round.
The Los Padres League champion Conqs are the only team out of the LPL to survive the first round. Santa Maria fell 82-62 at Sonora, the #2 seed in Division 3AAA. The Saints ended the season 16-12 despite a game-high 24 points from JT Simpkins and 18 from Shamarr Parker.
Lompoc, which led 14-11 in the second quarter, lost 56-32 at home to St. Francis, the #7 seed in Division 3A. The Braves finished 10-10 .
The Templeton boys lost to 8th ranked Harvard-Westlake in a Division 4AA game 75-46. The Eagles had won eight in a row headed into the playoffs, but finished the season 15-10.Clark Burton led the Eagles with 13 points, Jackson Wheeler added 7 and Alex Elterman chipped in 10.
The Morro Bay boys lost 81-40 at Nordhoff, the 10th seed in Division 4A. Zach Smith led the Pirates with 13 points and Luke Munds added 11. The Pirates ended the year 10-16.
