Cal Poly hangs on to beat Irvine, stays perfect in Big West

The Cal Poly men's basketball team improved to 3-0 in Big West play with a 72-67 home win against UC-Irvine on Saturday night.
A crowd of 2,125 people were on hand as the Mustangs jumped out to a 36-25 lead at the half. The Anteaters opened the second half with a 23-6 run to take a six point lead with 13 minutes to play.
The Mustangs regained a one point lead with 5:51 left on a three pointer by senior Dylan Royer. Royer was three for three shooting with each shot being a three pointer, he scored nine points. The lead changed hands six more times before Cal Poly took over for good on a layup by senior Chris O'Brien. O'Brien got fouled on the shot and made the free throw to put the Mustangs up 68-65 with 1:14 to play. Chris Eversley and Jamal Johnson both hit two free throws down the stretch to ice it for Cal Poly.
Eversley was 10-12 from the free throw line, the junior forward scored a game high 24 points to go along with a game best six rebounds. O'Brien had a career-high 16 points on five of six shooting off the bench.
Cal Poly shot 49 percent (22-45) from the field and 47 percent (7-15) from three point range. The Mustangs outrebounded the Anteaters 26-23. They dished 15 assists and comitted 11 turnovers.
The Mustangs improve to 7-6 overall, 3-0 in the conference. The Anteaters drop to 7-9, 1-2 in the Big West.
Cal Poly hits the road next week with games at UC-Davis (Thursday) and Pacific (Saturday). The Aggies are 0-2 in the conference, the Tigers are 1-1.
