The Cal Poly women's basketball team wasn't able to hang on to a five point halftime lead as the Mustangs lost, 71-58 to Long Beach State. The Mustangs needed to win the home game to claim a third straight Big West regular season title. With the loss, Cal Poly (13-5) ends the regular season in second place, one game back of Pacific (14-4). The Tigers won 59-54 at UC-Davis to secure the Conference title. The Mustangs beat Pacific twice this season and owned the tiebreaker had the teams tied.
Ariana Elegado and Nikol Allison led Cal Poly in scoring with 13 points. Elegado, a sophomore guard made 4 of 17 shots. Allison, a senior, added 9 rebounds and 5 steals off the bench. Junior post Molly Schlemer was held in check, the Righetti High School graduate scored 4 points on 1-9 shooting.
Long Beach State post Devin Hudson scored 22 points and had 20 rebounds. The 49ers improved to 9-9 in the Big West and will be the five seed for the Big West Tournament. In last years tournament, Long Beach State upset the Mustangs in the semifinals before losing in the finals to UCSB.
As the top two seeds, Cal Poly and Pacific will recieve byes into the semifinals on Friday at the Honda Center in Anaheim. The Mustangs have never won the Big West Tournament.
