The Cal Poly women's basketball team overwhelmed UCSB on Saturday, 66-47 in front of 1,050 fans at Mott Gym. Junior Molly Schlemer and senior Kayla Griffin combined to score 43 points as the Mustangs improve to 10-6 overall, 4-1 in the Big West. Cal Poly is tied with Pacific for first place but the Mustangs currently own the tiebreak over the Tigers. UCSB drops to 6-11, 2-3 in the conference.
Schlemer scored 22 points inside on 11 of 15 shooting. The Righetti High grad and reigning Big West player of the week added 8 rebounds. Griffin scored a career-high 21 points on 8-15 shooting, she made 3 of 4 from behind the three point line. Griffin also had a team-high nine rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Angelie Aguirre led UCSB with 10 points while Sweets Underwood added 9. Underwood also grabbed a team-high 8 rebounds.
Cal Poly was ahead 28-22 at the half before putting it away in the second half.
Cal Poly shot 48 percent from the field including 5-13 on three point attempts. UCSB made just 37% of its shots. The Mustangs dished out 18 assists while turning the ball over 10 times, the Gauchos turned the ball over 15 times with 11 assists. Cal Poly won the rebounding battle, 36-30.
Cal Poly makes its first trip to play Hawaii as a Big West opponent on Thursday. The game is set to tip at 9:00pm pacific time. Hawaii is 4-2 in the conference. UCSB will play at Cal State Northride (4-2) on Thursday.
