Cal Poly splits doubleheader at USC

After getting rained out on Friday and Saturday the 13th ranked Cal Poly baseball team was able to get in a doubleheader at 29th ranked USC on Sunday. The Mustangs won the first game, 5-1 but lost the second, 16-0. The doubleheader split leaves both teams with 8-2 records.

Cal Poly senior Chris Hoo doubled twice and knocked in two runs while catching a gem from starting pitcher Matt Imhof (2-1) in game one. Imhof allowed one run and five hits in seven innings with seven strikeouts before giving way to Reid Reilly who pitched two shutout innings to secure the win.

The Mustangs had 10 hits in the first game, including two each by Hoo and sophomore second baseman Mark Mathias. Tim Wise and Jordan Ellis both added RBI singles while Brian Mundell contributed a sacrifice fly.

The game was delayed one hour and five minutes in the bottom of the first inning by rain.

Freshman pitcher Slater Lee took the mound for Cal Poly in game two, eight days after pitching a complete-game two-hit shutout against defending national champion UCLA. Lee only lasted 2 1/3 innings before he was pulled after giving up six runs (five earned). Six other Cal Poly pitchers were used in the game including Casey Bloomquist who didn't start this weekend because the Mustangs only played two games in the series.

USC's starting pitcher Bob Wheatley (seven inning, 10 strikeouts) along with relievers Sean Adler and Kyle Davis held the Mustangs to just two hits. A third-inning single by Peter Van Gansen and a fourth-inning single by Brian Mundell.

Cal Poly only had four baserunners in the nightcap, none reaching third base, and was shut out for the first time in 50 games.

First baseman Jake Hernandez went 4-for-5 to lead USC's 16-hit attack.

After seven straight games on the road, Cal Poly will be back at Baggett Stadium on Tuesday night (6:00pm) against Santa Clara (6-6). The Mustangs beat the Broncos in Santa Clara, 8-0 earlier this season. Cal Poly will play three games at Seattle starting on Friday before embarking on an 18 game homestand.
