Cal Poly trails Sam Houston State 8-0 at halftime after costly mistakes

The Cal Poly football team trails Sam Houston State 8-0 at halftime in a second round FCS playoff game in Huntsville, Texas.

Cal Poly has struggled to sustain drives offensively, but is relying on the defense to keep the Green and Gold in the game.

The Mustangs were driving on their second possession, but quarterback Andre Broadous fumbled the ball at the Sam Houston State 20 yard line after a nice gain and the Bearkats recovered the ball.

The game was scoreless after the first quarter. Cal Poly was forced to punt early in the second quarter and the Bearkats blocked Bobby Zalud's punt. It squirted into the Cal Poly endzone, but two Bearkats could not pounce on the ball and it rolled out of the endzone for a safety and 2-0 Sam Houston State lead.

The Bearkats added a 20 yard field goal midway through the quarter. Cal Poly's defense stopped the Sam Houston State offense with barelty a minute to play in the first half. However, Chris Nicholls dropped the punt and the Bearkats recovered at the Cal Poly 7 yard line. They turned that into 3 more points with a 32 yard field goal.
