Cal Poly women open holiday tournament Friday in Mott Gym

The Cal Poly women's basketball team renews a Thanksgiving holiday tradition on Friday with the start of the Thanksgiving Tournament. The Mustangs open the three-day tourney against 3-1 Stephen F. Austin at 2pm.

Cal Poly enters 2-2. The Mustangs won their home opener last weekend 69-50 over San Diego and upset Oregon State out of the Pac-12 72-62. Their losses have come at now 18th ranked Oklahoma State 90-59 and at 11th ranked California 87-61.

The Mustangs have had three players lead the team in scoring so far this season. Junior and Righetti High graduate Molly Schlemer had 21 points and 12 rebounds at Oklahoma State. Ariana Elegado poured in 27 at Oregon State. Kayla Griffin, a senior, scored 16 points against USD and 13 at Cal. The Mustangs will need players to step up all season after losing three of the team's five leading scorers from last year's team, including the program's all-time leading scorer and rebounder Kristina Santiago.

"The difference now is that we know that all of our players can make some sort of contribution, maybe not as large as Kristina did to our team last year. But the contributions that people make, small or big, make all the difference," said Schlemer, who's averaging 11.7 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.

Friday will be the first-ever meeting between Cal Poly and Stephen F. Austin. Saturday, Stephen F. Austin plays Cal State Bakersfield at 2pm. The Mustangs close out the tournament Sunday at 2pm against the Roadrunners.
