Studies of low-income preschoolers in the two largest U.S. cities offer evidence the childhood obesity epidemic may have leveled off.

Researchers compared obesity prevalence among three and four-year old children living in New York City and Los Angeles County.

They were all enrolled in the government's nutrition program for Women, Infants and Children, or WIC.

In New York City, obesity prevalence decreased from 19% in 2003 to 15% in 2011.

It was a different story in Los Angeles County, where the prevalence increased until 2008, then slowly started to decrease to about 20% in 2011.

In both cities, childhood obesity was a particular problem among Hispanic populations.
