CHP Identifies couple killed in suspected DUI crash near Shandon

The California Highway Patrol has released the names of the two people killed in a crash on State Route 46 over the weekend.

CHP says Irene Massara, 68, and her husband, Charles Massara, 69, both from Bakersfield, were killed Saturday.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Vicente Muniz Montes, 38, from Shandon, was driving a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee on the eastbound side of the road, approaching McMillan Canyon. Florencio Ochoa Rojas, 27, was a passenger in the Jeep.

Officials say Montes was driving under the influence of alcohol and made a turn directly in front of Charles Massara's Nissan Versa. Charles Massara wasn't able to avoid the accident and crashed into the Jeep. A Toyota that was also on the road then rear-ended the Jeep.

Irene Massara died at the scene.

Charles Massara was airlifted to a local hospital where he later died.

CHP says Montes and Rojas ran away from the scene of the accident. CHP and the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office searched Shandon for the two men. They were both found and arrested.

There was already a warrant out for Montes's arrest because he failed to appear in court after getting a DUI earlier this year.
