Santa Maria city code enforcement officers were out and about in the city Thursday, knocking on doors.
They handed out brochures to residents that explain how code compliance laws work and they told them whom to contact if they see a problem in their community.
"It builds communities, it gets citizens involved with one another. They get to know one another and take pride in their communities. It helps lower the crime rate and that's why we are out here. We want everybody informed," said Code Enforcement Officer Celia Lennon.
Thursday's "walk and talk" was conducted in the North Benwiley area. Monthly visits are planned in other neighborhoods in the future.
