Cougars can't hold early lead, fall to 3rd ranked Cypress 9-4

Third-ranked Cypress College baseball overcame a 4-3 deficit in the fourth inning to beat host Cuesta College 9-4 in a non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars fell to 10-13 overall, while the Chargers improved to 15-9. The game opened the Spring Break Tournament co-hosted by Cuesta and Allan Hancock College baseball.

Cypress scored three early runs to take a 3-0 lead head into the bottom of the second inning. Cuesta got on the board in the bottom half when Paso Robles High graduate Mac Stuart singled to left-center field to drive in Spencer Ruggles with the Cougars' first run of the game.

The Cougars drove the Cypress starting pitcher from the game after Andrew Montanari singled to lead off the bottom of the third and San Luis Obispo High graduate Marco Murillo walked on five pitches. Cypress' relief pitcher threw three wild pitches and walked one hitter allowing both runners he inherited to score tying the game at 3-3. Ruggles, an Atascadero High graduate, ripped a two-out single to center to score Steve Herting to give Cuesta its first lead of the game 4-3. However, Herting was the last Cougar to score a run in the game.

Cypress tied it with a run in the sixth inning before taking the lead for good with 2 in the seventh and adding 3 more in the eighth. Cypress tallied 15 hits in the game compared to 7 by Cuesta.

Ruggles led the Cougars offense with 3 hits in 4 at bats. The loss went to Alex Fagalde, who allowed 3 runs and 5 hits in 1 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. Starter Travis Beck did not factor in the decision. The right hander allowed 4 runs in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out 3.

Cuesta plays Canyons at 2 pm on Wednesday, while co-host Hancock battles Cerritos at 1 p.m.
