The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball program has named Cal Poly Associate Head Coach Kerri Nakamoto the seventh head coach in program history.
She replaces Renee Jimenez, who left to take over at Cal State San Bernardino. The Otters' gain is the Mustangs' loss.
Nakamoto spent the last eight seasons helping the Cal Poly women's basketball team win two of the last three Big West Conference regular season titles. The Mustangs are coming off their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
The Otters have advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament the last three seasons. They won the CCAA regular season title in 2011 and the CCAA Tournament crown in 2012.
" The opportunity to run my own program is one I've always dreamed of," said Nakamoto in a CSUMB press release. " I cannot ask for a better university to begin my journey as a new head coach. I am extremely excited to worth with such a talented group of young women at CSUMB and continue building on their past successes."
Recent St. Joseph High graduate Tatiana Dunlap, who averaged nearly 24 points per game her senior season on her way to Pac 7 League MVP and All-CIF honors, signed with CSUMB earlier this spring.
