BIG SUR, Calif. (AP) - Officials say work crews are making some progress in clearing debris from a rock slide that forced the closure of Highway 1 through the Big Sur area of the California coast.
State transportation officials say after closing the highway Monday at Partington Ridge Road near the community of Big Sur, crews will open one lane of the highway to let traffic through at 8 a.m., noon and 4 p.m. on Thursday.
Caltrans spokesman Colin Jones says because the section of roadway is near an active slide area, the flow of traffic will be controlled when the highway is open.
Jones says drivers approaching the area will have a chance to turn around a few miles south and north of where the road work is being done.
A separate rock slide on Highway 1 near Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo County was cleared Monday.
