Cuesta baseball loses opening series of the season

The fourth ranked Cuesta baseball team lost its season opening series against third ranked Orange Coast, two games to one. After losing 7-1 on Friday the Cougars split a doubleheader with the Pirates on Saturday.

In game one, Cuesta broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning as Sophomore Scott Shields drove in freshman Marco Murrillo with a sacrifice fly. Shields and Murrillo are both San Luis Obispo High School graduates. Two runs were enough for Lompoc High School graduate Lucas Martin. The freshman lefty pitched a complete game. Martin allowed one unearned run and five hits while striking out four. The Cougars won the first game, 2-1.

Game two was a seven inning game, Cuesta had a 1-0 lead until Orange Coast rallied for three runs in the sixth. The Cougars loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh but freshman Parker Hindle grounded into a game ending double-play. Hindle grounded out to the pitcher who threw home for a force out, the catcher then threw to first for the double-play. Murrillo started game two for Cuesta, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing three runs, two earned.

Cuesta only managed two hits in the first game and five hits in the second.

The 1-2 Cougars play at Riverside on Tuesday at 5:00pm.
