Cuesta College is now offering free parking passes to veterans in honor of a former student.
The school says Mike Mihalakis, who was enlisted in the Army National Guard, had hopes of returning back to Cuesta after service in Iraq, but he died in December 2003.
A teacher had donated $1,000 to fund free parking passes to all veterans, but the money quickly ran out.
The San Luis Obispo Elks Lodge donated $3,000 to keep the program, known as "A Mike Pass," alive.
Frank Rowan, Elks Public Relations Chairman, told KSBY News, "That's what's important. Help veterans in any way they can to go to college and improve their education. I think it's the least we can do once they put their life on the line."
Cuesta College says vets should check with the veteran's resource center on how to obtain a free parking pass.
