The Cuesta College Athletics Department honored two basketball players as its Athletes of the Month for December.
Morro Bay High graduate Aria Johnson was named the Female Athlete of the Month. The sophomore leads the team with 14.2 points and 9.8 rebounds per game and is shooting 47 percent from the floor. Johnson also ranks number one on her team with 51 steals and 16 blocked shots. She is a big reason why the Lady Cougars are off to a 13-7 start and won their Western State Conference opener on Wednesday. During the preseason, Johnson was named to three All-Tournament squads in December.
The Cuesta women are trying to end a six-year playoff drought.
Plamen Hristov has continued where he left off last season. The 2012 All-Conference forward leads the Cougars this year with 15.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. He's started every game for the Cougars, who've played 21 straight games on the road. Wednesday in Cuesta's WSC opening win at Moorpark, Hristov scored 25 points and pulled down 20 rebounds. Hristov also ranks sixth in the State by hitting 46 of his 108 three-point shots.
The Cuesta men are in search of their fourth WSC title in the last five years.
