Fourteen people applied for the open seat on the Santa Maria City Council by the Tuesday 5 p.m. deadline.

The council has been deadlocked on how to fill the open seat since the vacancy was created in December after Alice Patino became mayor.

The applicants include former Councilmember Mike Cordero and Etta Waterfield who lost a race for city council by just two votes.

The 4-member city council will interview the applicants at its next meeting on Tuesday night.
