Despite a career-high 31 points from sophomore guard Ariana Elegado, the Cal Poly women's basketball team blew a 12 point halftime lead and lost 70-67 to St. Mary's on Thursday night in Mott Gym.
The Mustangs saw their two-game winning streak snapped by the Gales and dropped to 4-3 overall.
Elegado finished 7 for 14 from 3-point range and was 11 for 19 from the floor overall to finish with 31 points. She had 19 points at the break to lead the Mustangs to a 32-20 halftime lead.
The Gaels regained the lead with 6:36 to play in the game on a 3-point bucket from Lauren Nicholson. The Mustangs had a chance to tie it in the closing seconds, but missed three 3-point shot attempts.
Kayla Griffin added 14 points for the Mustangs. However, she did miss four of her seven free throw attempts.
Cal Poly shot 37 percent from the floor and 44 percent (12 for 27) from 3-point territory.
The Gaels, who improved to 4-2 overall, finished the night shooting 40 percent from the floor and made 18 of their 26 free throws. Cal Poly was 7 for 13 from the line for a 54% clip.
St. Mary's pulled down 20 offensive rebounds and finished with 49 overall. Cal Poly managed just 33 rebounds led by 5 from Brittany Woodard.
The Mustangs return to action on December 2 at Nevada.
