Doctors may use smartphone apps for patients

There are some new apps that allow doctors to listen to a patient's heart beat, or calculate medicine doses.

A majority of apps won't hurt patients if they fail. However, the FDA is determining which apps may need oversight.

Experts say the mobile apps that aim to transform a phone to tablet into a medicinal device. For example, one app performs an ECG, and another controls the delivery of insulin to diabetics. Doctors can also review X-rays on their phone and calculate radiation dosages.

FDA experts say only a fraction of medical apps would need to go through the approval process.
