Dog owner speaks out after losing her pets in a fire at Thousand Hills

"Mac and Stella were beautiful dogs. Mac was a yellow lab, he was between 7 and 8 and Stella was a Great Pyrenees, and she was between 3 and 4," said Cammy Harris, who lost her dogs last week in a fire at Thousand Hills Pet Resort, which is just outside the city of San Luis Obispo.

In many ways, life can be like train, making unscheduled stops, but inevitably there's always an end.

"They were friends, they were buddies, they took care of each other until the end," said Harris, who was out of town when the fire started.

The tracks of life for Mac and Stella meandered, and then crisscrossed with Cammy Harris when she rescued them a year ago.

"They were found together up in Paso Robles running in a vineyard," she explained. So she took them on-board.

"I don't have kids, so they are like my kids," Harris said.

Their journey together, long walks and afternoons in the garden.

"Mac would be right here all the time, Stella would be lying in the shade," said Harris.

Stella and Mac reached their destination early on Nov. 19th. They were killed along with five other dogs in an electrical fire at Thousand Hills. Three small kennels burned, the dogs were trapped inside.

"It's life, it's the circle of life and that's what you tell yourself and that is what you have to accept.

Hospice of San Luis Obispo has a pet loss meeting every Monday at 6:00 p.m. Harris went last week, and she plans to continue going. All the other pet owners, who lost their dogs in the fire, have been invited to go as well.

Thousand Hills Pet Resort installed a heat detection system in all its kennels to prevent future fires.

Harris said she won't hesitate to take her next dog to Thousand Hills, she said it's more than a kennel, it's like home.
