A 19-year-old man arrested for domestic violence was found hanged in a temporary holding cell at the Santa Maria Police Department on Saturday.

Chief Ralph Martin said an officer discovered that the man had hanged himself less than an hour after he was arrested.

Officers performed CPR and took him to a local hospital where Chief Martin said the man is brain dead.

Martin said the Santa Barbara County Sheriff''s Office has been asked to investigate the suicide attempt. The chief said no one at the SMPD can recall a previous suicide in the department's holding cell
