The Dos Pueblos boys basketball team emerged victorious on a night the Chargers and Cabrillo Conquistadores were treated like royalty from one of their own. Friday night, DP overcame a 7 point halftime deficit to defeat Cabrillo 55-53 in the Thunderdome at UCSB.
The game was sponsored by 2007 Cabrillo graduate Danny Duffy. The 23 year old is about to begin his third big league season with the Kansas City Royals. The left-handed pitcher was drafted by the Royals in the third round of the 2007 Draft during his high school graduation.
Duffy has never forgotten his Central Coast roots. He paid for all expenses associated with renting the Thunderdome. He took care of two buses from Cabrillo High to the Thunderdome and paid for meals for both teams.
The 23 year old also paid to rent out the Lake Elsinore minor league stadium for the Cabrillo baseball team last spring for a game with another high school.
The left-handed pitcher is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery performed earlier this year. Duffy has made 26 career starts for the Royals. He owns a 6-10 record with 115 strikeouts in 133 1/3 innings pitched. He will begin his third season with the Royals in the spring.
KSBY Sports will air more from Duffy about his rehab and his decision to sponsor the game next week.
