Kansas City Royals pitcher Danny Duffy has never forgotten his Central Coast roots. In fact, the Cabrillo High graduate is giving back to his alma mater in a unique way.
Duffy is sponsoring a varsity basketball game in the Thunderdome at UCSB on Friday night. The Cabrillo boys play Dos Pueblos at 7:30 pm.
Cabrillo administrators say Duffy has agreed to pay for the rental fee and staffing associated with the Thunderdome, plus two buses to the game from Cabrillo high for the team, cheerleaders, parents and fans.
The 23 year old also paid to rent out the Lake Elsinore minor league stadium for the Cabrillo baseball team last spring for a game with another high school.
Duffy was drafted in the third round by the Royals in the 2007 Draft on the same day he graduated from Cabrillo High.
The left-handed pitcher is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery performed earlier this year. Duffy has made 26 career starts for the Royals. He owns a 6-10 record with 115 strikeouts in 133 1/3 innings pitched. He will begin his third season with the Royals in the spring.
