Dunn High School boys soccer player Abu Danladi is the 2013-14 Gatorade National Player of the Year.
Former MLS CUP MVP Alecko Eskandarian surprised the Danladi during class on Thursday with the award. Eskandarian was the player of the year himself in 1999.
Danladi was shocked by the surprise, the Ghana native who lives with a host family in Los Olivos thanked the Dunn community during a press conference. "I know my family in Ghana, they're not here but they really appreciate anything that you guys have done for me. I'm part of a family that I will carry on for the rest of my life and you guys made this dream come into reality" said Danladi.
Gatorade has teamed with USA Today to honor the top high school athletes for 29 years. The award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character. Danladi is now a finalist for the Gatorade Male High School Athlete of the Year award which will be presented at a special ceremony prior to The ESPY Awards in July.
During his senior season, Danladi netted 25 goals and assisted 15 more, while carrying the Earwigs to the CIF-Southern Section Division VI Tournament. Danladi will play at UCLA next season.
