Experts with the Infectious Disease Society of America say we're not developing new antibiotics fast enough.
There are currently seven antibiotics in development that would fight multidrug-resistant bacteria, but they are not guaranteed to be approved by the FDA or be effective against the strongest types of bacteria by the time they are approved.
Experts are encouraging manufacturers to invest in antibiotic development.
Many drug companies are looking for treatments for chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease, rather than antibiotics which are taken for a short amount of time.
The ISDA has set a goal of having 10 new antibiotics by 2020.
