Family speaks out about their loss in a deadly drive-by shooting

It was an emotional day for the family of a local drive-by shooting victim as the trial came to an end.

"We knew justice would be served for our baby and today that was guaranteed," said Susan Strouse, Gabriel Salgado's aunt as she was standing outside a San Luis Obispo County courtroom Wednesday.

A jury found Armando Yepez guilty in the drive-by shooting that killed 17-year-old Salgado.

The shooting happened last Nov. on 21st street in Oceano.

Another teenager was shot in the leg and survived.

Armando Yepez was arrested during a traffic stop on Highway 101 in Nipomo in May.

"When the verdict was read -- it was a sigh of relief," said Strouse.

There was a loud gasp in the courtroom and tears poured when the verdict was read.

"It's not going to bring him back, but with a guilty verdict maybe we can start to heal," she said.

Salgado's family wore buttons and hooded sweatshirts that said justice for Gabriel.

"You never think something like this is going to happen to one of your babies, but we just keep going day by day," said Strouse.

Salgado was a senior at Lopez High School in Arroyo Grande. Friends said he was never in a gang. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"He was young and ambitious and funny and he had a smile that you will never forget. We hold him in our hearts and our memories and that's the best that we can do," said Strouse.
