Five finalists interviewed for Santa Maria police chief, most from Los Angeles

KSBY News has learned Interim Santa Maria Police Chief Ralph Martin was one of five candidates interviewed Thursday for the permanent position.

Most of the candidates are from Los Angeles, all are male and none is from the Central Coast.

The interviews were conducted by two panels at the Santa Maria Inn.

The panelists included Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown, Santa Barbara Police Chief Cam Sanchez, Santa Maria Fire Chief Dan Orr and several community leaders.

The candidates had to score at least a 70-percent rating from the panelists to make an eligibility list which will be presented to City Manager Rick Haydon.

Haydon told KSBY News he plans to interview two of the candidates who meet that criteria and name a new SMPD chief by the middle of next month.

Martin has been the interim chief since Danny Macagni retired in August.

Haydon hopes to have a new chief on the job by February.
