Former Lompoc student remembered as a free spirit

A former Lompoc High School student is among those killed in the flooding that began in Colorado late last week.

The body of Wiyanna Nelson, 19, was found last Friday.

On Monday, Lompoc girls' volleyball head coach Aaron Batula flipped through an old yearbook to help him bring back memories of his former player.

"She was a good kid. She played for us for three years. She was kind of quiet in volleyball but was always a good kid and had a positive attitude," he said.

Nelson wore the number three when she played for the Lompoc Braves.

"She just always struck me that she had a free spirit and that you knew that she was going to live life past high school," said Coach Batula.

He says she was also a water polo player and actress. Batula called her a talented young woman.

"It's a tragedy for someone that young to have passed away like this. She had a lot of life left to live," said Coach Batula.

The exact cause of Nelson's death is still under investigation.
