Fresno police: Sikh beating a possible hate crime

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Police say an elderly Sikh man is hospitalized in serious condition and a suspect is in custody after the man was attacked outside a Sikh temple in Fresno.

Officials say 82-year-old Plara Singh was attacked and beaten with an iron bar outside the Nanaksar Sikh Temple around 7 a.m. Sunday.

Family members say Singh - who goes to the temple every day - had just left the temple when he was attacked. He's in a local hospital where he's being treated for head wounds, broken bones and ribs.

Fresno police Sgt. Jaime Rios says investigators have arrested Gilbert Garcia on charges of assault with a deadly weapon. They're also investigating the attack as a possible hate crime. Police did not release any additional information about the suspect.

Temple officials say the attack was not a robbery and Singh had never seen the man before.
