Sophomore Austin Pettibone held Cal Poly to two runs in eight innings as UCSB beat the 17th ranked Mustangs, 4-2 at Caesar Uyesake Stadium in Santa Barbara.
The Gauchos led game one of the three game Big West Series , 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning when they loaded the bases with nobody out. Robby Nesovic grounded into a force play at second base, which would have scored a run, but Brandon Trinkwon was called out for interference at second base, a double play was called and the Gaucho runners were sent back to second and third. Cal Poly closer Reed Reilly was one pitch away from getting out of the inning when the runners at second and third pulled off a double steal for a run. Tyler Kuresa then singled up the middle on a 1-2 pitch to drive in another run and give UCSB a 4-1 lead.
Cal Poly got one run back in the eighth as shortstop Peter Van Gansen singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by left fielder Jordan Ellis but that was as close as the Mustangs could get.
Pettibone didn't have any strikeouts, he walked one. He gave up a leadoff single to Nick Torres in the ninth but freshman Dylan Hecht earned his third save by striking out three consecutive batters after that. Pettibone improves to 4-2.
Cal Poly senior Joey Wagman took the loss to drop to 6-2. The right hander allowed four runs, three of them earned in six innings. He gave up a season-high 11 hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Cal Poly took the first lead of the game in the top of the fourth inning on a David Armendariz solo home run. It was the juniors second career home run. UCSB answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth and another in the sixth before the two runs in the seventh.
The Gauchos out-hit the Mustangs, 12-6. All 12 hits were singles including three for first baseman Tyler Kuresa.
The win improves UCSB to 15-13 for the year and 2-2 in Big West games. Cal Poly, which beat the Gauchos twice in a three-game non-conference series two weeks ago, fell to 20-7 and 3-1.
The second game of the series is on Saturday at 2 p.m. with sophomore southpaw Matt Imhof (3-0, 1.33 ERA) on the mound for Cal Poly against UC Santa Barbara freshman left-hander Justin Jacome (2-2, 4.17 ERA).
