One of our Good Questions came up during this past weekend's Santa Maria Valley Strawberry Festival. Shari from Santa Maria wants to know: Are organic strawberries as big as the regular ones? Good Question.
The California Strawberry Commission says different varieties of strawberries vary in size, but organic and non-organic come out about the same. Any strawberry is largest at the start of a season, and smallest at season's end. And since strawberries are a global crop, you could be comparing berries harvested at different phases of respective seasons.
Another question is about this Saturday, when many will enjoy the pleasures of burritos, tacos and pinatas. A viewer from Lompoc wants to know: Does Cinco de Mayo celebrate Mexico's independence?
No, Mexico got it's independence from Spain on September 16th, 1821. It was the Fifth of May, or Cinco de Mayo, of 1862 that some outnumbered Mexican soldiers defeated France which had launched an empire-building invasion. A year later, France returned with more troops and won, ruling for three years.
Cinco de Mayo has become a popular day in the U.S. to celebrate Mexican food, music and culture.
