Rachel Gruetzmacher and Mahreya Kelly scored three goals apiece to lead the Atascadero High girls water polo team to a 7-4 win over Etiwanda in a C.I.F. Division 3 wildcard match on Tuesday. The game was played at Arroyo Grande High School.
The Greyhounds improved to 14-11 overall and play at top-ranked and 22-7 Harvard Westlake, the Mission League champions, in Wednesday's first round.
The Hounds fell behind 2-0 with 2:16 to go in the opening period. Kelly fired in Atascadero's first goal of the game about a minute later as the Hounds trailed by one to open the second quarter. Gruetzmacher rifled one by the Etiwanda goalie about halfway through the second to tie the game at 2-2. A few minutes later, Claire Leong gave Atascadero the lead for good with her only goal of the game to make it 3-2. Kelly added another to provide a 4-2 Atascadero lead at the break.
Gruetzmacher sent one to the back of the cage in the third to give Atascadero a 5-3 lead going into the final period.
The win was the program's first postseason win in two years and second in the last twelve years.
