Hancock was beating Cuesta, 2-0 with two outs in the top of the fourth inning. Bulldog pitcher Marc Baker induced a grounder to second base that Josh Luehmann booted for an error. Instead of the inning being over, Cuesta scored eight unearned runs with two outs to take an 8-2 lead. The inning propelled the Cougars to a 13-6 win.
Baker, a Nipomo High School graduate threw 53 pitches in the fourth inning that included another error and a misplay on a routine pop-up. He left after the fourth inning, allowing 8 runs, all of them un-earned.
Lucas Martin earned the win for Cuesta, allowing three runs in 7 1/3 innings. The Lompoc High School graduate gave up 11 hits and two walks while striking out 10.
The Bulldogs outhit the Cougars, 15-12 but Cuesta drew 9 walks. Hancock made three errors compared to one for the Cougars.
Cuesta improves to 12-15 overall, 6-5 in the Western State Conference. The Cougars are now in a tie for second place with Ventura, a game back of Santa Barbara. Hancock drops into a tie with Oxnard for fourth place at 5-6, the Bulldogs are 13-14 overall.
Hancock will play at Cuesta on Tuesday at 2:30pm.
