The UC Davis Pavement Research Center has released a memorandum on the preliminary results of the Highway 1 Resurfacing Project.
The Center conducted studies on the recent chip seal project on Highway 1 in northern San Luis Obispo County. Local bicyclists participated in the study to provide technical information about highway pavement strategies and how they relate to bicycling. Cyclists said the section of the road from Cambria to the San Luis Obispo/Monterey County line was too rough. Caltrans tested several resurfacing methods and found a treatment involving sand worked best to smooth the asphalt.
