Hundreds of Central Coast residents turned out for the chance to meet UFC star Wanderlei Silva on Friday.
The so-called "Axe Murderer" of the octagon was at Spencer's Fresh Market in Arroyo Grande posing for pictures and signing autographs. Fans started showing up nearly an hour before he was scheduled to arrive.
The popular mixed martial artist said he was thrilled to make his first stop on the Central Coast and receive a warm welcome from fans.
"It's amazing because now it's a Friday at noon and a lot of guys come to talk to me," said Silva. "This is amazing. I love the contact with the fans and I wanted to look at my fans around the world."
The event helped kick off XYIENCE's relationship with the five-store grocery chain that recently started carrying the official energy drink of the UFC.
Saturday, local UFC fans can watch UFC 112 with Silva at a live viewing party at the Red Zone, located at 825 North "H" Street in Lompoc. It runs from 6pm to 10pm. Tickets are required. For reservations, please call (805) 736.2050.
Silva has a career 33-10 record. He is scheduled to fight Yoshihiro Akiyama (13-1-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) during UFC 116 on July 3 in Las Vegas.
