Insect repellents lose effectiveness over time

A new study suggests the active ingredient in most insect repellents loses its effectiveness over time.

British researchers put mosquitoes in a room with a human arm covered in DEET.

At first, the insects were repelled by the smell, but the second time, the DEET was less effective.

Experts say it looks like exposure to the chemical changes insects' sense of smell and makes them resistant to repellents.

They stress that consumers should not stop using products with DEET.
