WASHINGTON (AP) - A legendary peace vigil outside the White House is up and running again after being dismantled for the first time in more than 30 years.
Many tourists strolling along Pennsylvania Avenue since 1981 are likely to have come across Concepcion Picciotto or heard her warnings about the dangers of warfare and nuclear weapons.
Picciotto or her supporters have been in their message-laden shelter in good weather and bad, and as long as it's occupied, it's allowed to stay. But a volunteer looking after the vigil while Picciotto took a break abandoned his post, and police removed it overnight.
Picciotto says with the help of volunteers and a local politician, she persuaded police to return her property. She says it will stay as long as necessary to keep calling for disarmament.
