Jacobs motivated by half inch

Madison Jacobs established herself as one of the best discus throwers and shot putters in the state last year but now in her senior season, she has some unfinished business. Jacobs had what at the time was a personal best discus throw of 155'9" at the CIF State meet last year. She had the top mark until the last throw from the last thrower beat her by a half inch. "The worst part was being on the podium and looking down and saying, man that could have been me" said Jacobs.

Jacobs' throwing coach at Arroyo Grande, Stephen Field says she hasn't forgotten about that second place finish at state. "I think that definitely motivated her, I mean the competitor that she is. She's held on to that and she's remembered that" said Field.

Before the spring season started Jacobs signed a national letter of intent to the University of Kentucky. She'll join her older brother Seth as a college athlete. Seth redshirted during his first season on the Oklahoma State football team. "Seth has always been my role model, he's always worked hard, extremely hard and he's always known what he wanted. Looking up to him I have gained a lot of strength" said Madison.

Jacobs set a personal best in the discus throw at the Mt. Sac Relays last weekend with a mark of 156'7", good for second place behind Dos Pueblos junior Stamatia Scarvelis who had the top throw in the state this year of 160'7". Scarvelis also has the best mark in the shot put, Jacobs has the seventh best shot put in California this season.
