The Greyhounds sprinted out of the gates and cruised to a 79-45 win over visiting Bolsa Grande in their Division 3AA CIF playoff opener on Wednesday night.
The Pac-7 League co-champion Atascadero boys imrpoved to 18-8 overall after ending the Matadors' season with a 6-14 mark.
Ryan O'Connell and Robbie Berwick led the Greyhounds with 5 points apiece in the first quarter. Joe Johnson was red hot in the second quarter with 12 of the team's 18 points in the period. Berwick added 8 more points in Atascadero's 24 point third quarter to put the game away.
Three Greyhounds scored 12 or more points. Johnson led the way with 16 points, Berwick finished with 15 and O'Connell added 12. Atascadero won despite the absences of Brady Youngquist and Jared Stuedemann for various reasons.
Atascadero, which has made it to the quarterfinals in the previous four seasons, hosts Arlington Friday in the second round. Atascadero is seeded #8 in D-3AA and Arlington is seeded #9. Arlington beat Indio 57-44 on Wednesday night.
